Friday 31st August 2012 Is Social Media Just Another Channel?

Yes, it may be, but it’s so much more than that. Social is forcing big brands to review how they engage with their customers, how they leverage a whole new stream of customer insight and how they respond to events.  It is forcing companies to treat social as just another channel to manage within their overall customer contact strategy.

So, what are the next steps for harnessing the social opportunity? The fact is that everyone is already talking about your brand, across multiple social channels, forums and blogs. The key is to research that social activity, discover the key conversations, the top influencers, the sentiment and the demographics of each social participant.

For a limited period, Respondez are still offering a free report on social media activity across your brand, products and competitors. Click here for more information.

Thursday 30th August 2012 The Paralympics launch to a Global Social Audience

The London 2012 Paralympic Games launched in unforgettable style on Wednesday night (29 August), with Professor Stephen Hawking and Sir Ian McKellen appearing in a memorable Opening Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium.

The event launched 11 days of competition involving 4,280 athletes, competing across 20 sports, from 164 countries.  The biggest Paralympic Games ever staged encouraged a huge surge in social mentions, with a Twitter following across the globe.

But, which Paralympians are going to create the biggest buzz, both in the stadia and across the social sphere?  We’ll be keeping a social eye on the likes of the flamboyant Lee Pearson in equestrian, Ellie Simmons in the pool and the race for the fastest Paralympian across 100m where a certain Oscar Pistorius will be up against a fast improving British teenager Jonny Peacock...

Tuesday 21st August 2012 London 2012 Closing Ceremony - Social Media and the Armchair Critic

While it is inevitable that high profile televised events will attract a certain level of ‘commentary’ from social media users - London 2012’s Closing Ceremony and its ‘Symphony Of British Culture’ was always going to see dramatic spikes in activity.
This spectacular show was watched by an average 23.4 million viewers and was the largest televised event since current viewer measurement systems began.
By analysing social media activity during its screening it’s easy to see that viewers had one eye on the TV and the other on social media sites, with a surge of activity when each and every act started to perform.

The overall activity on Twitter reached around 120,000 tweets mentioning ‘Closing Ceremony’  but it seems that the finale of the ‘Social Games’ was also the point where the fanbases of the acts involved took part in an incredible amount of online activity.

When ‘boy band’ One Direction performed it was perhaps unsurprising that a surge in activity would follow, given that their fanbase is mainly of the generation that grows up familiar with social media from an early age.
This was retweeted nearly 16,000 times – demonstrating how a vocal and enthusiastic fanbase can have an incredible reach. After all - how many saw it but didn’t retweet?

There were surprises though - 90’s act Spice Girls reformed for the ceremony and reached 100,000 mentions on Twitter during their performance.

Annie Lennox had around 70,000 mentions during the ceremony too showing that even the ‘older’ acts solicit a substantial social media response.

While the ceremony was a stunning spectacle and without a doubt successful- its perhaps quite fitting that the real winner in social media activity was the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, who at one point was the subject of an incredible 80,000 tweets per minute! Perhaps that’s another record for this inspirational sportsman.

Friday 10th August 2012 Gold medal for NASA in the 563 billion metres

This past Sunday the social world turned its attention away from the Olympics just for a moment to witness something incredible together. They tuned in to watch NASA’s Curiosity Rover make an incredible touchdown on Mars. They also took to social media to talk about it, with Twitter peaking at nearly 300,000 mentions across the world.

Whilst this was a project undertaken in the USA, people across the world felt the excitement of Curiosity’s landing. The majority of conversations originated from the US (49%), but we also found mentions spanning the globe – that’s our world, not from Mars... yet!

Thursday 2nd August 2012 Golden Wednesday

So... we said that we would be back when Team GB win their first gold. Well, it didn’t take too long with Golden Wednesday producing Gold medals for both Glover and Stanning in the rowing and Bradley Wiggins in the cycling time trial.

As our Word Cloud for yesterday shows, there was one dominant term on Twitter with ‘gold’ unsurprisingly being the most mentioned word:

However, if you weren’t aware there was another hot social competition yesterday with Mark Cavendish and Team GB battling it out for the most retweeted Twitter post! Currently, Mark is just ahead with 1,885 retweets, to Team GB’s 1,873... but, we can all still influence this one:
